Life at Fuzzy Labs: Oscar Wong

We do a lot of great engineering work on our customer projects, and each project has a full team of engineers behind it. In this blog series we’re peeling back the curtain so you can get to know more about our engineers, and find out what a typical day looks like for a Fuzzician.

Oscar Wong: MLOps Engineer

7:15 AM

I'm usually up about an hour before heading into the office, giving me enough time to check my socials, catching up with friends from different parts of the world, skimming emails, browsing Instagram for new Manchester restaurants to try over the weekend, and checking X for any cutting-edge open-source ML architecture updates before grabbing some breakfast. Most mornings, I’ll stop at Greggs on the way, especially during winter, the international bulking season. Honestly, you can’t beat Greggs when it comes to calories per £.

8:15 AM

At the end of each day, I usually write a short summary of what I’ve done and share it on the project Slack channel, this is so everyone has a better sense of the progress we’ve made. I tend to kick off the day reviewing these notes to get back into the zone whilst drinking an unhealthy amount of coffee. After that, I plan out the tasks I want to prioritise for the day and jot down any discussion points for the stand up.

Next, I’ll typically review PRs and address any questions raised on Slack ahead of our 9 AM team catch up. Every other day, we spend about 30 minutes chatting about life and easing into the workday. I think this really helps to build strong connections with the team.

9:30 AM

Depending on the project, I might have a stand-up right after the team catch-up. I like doing these early because they give me a clear view of where everyone’s at, with updates on what we worked on the day before.

After the stand-up, I get my head stuck into a ticket or two – usually coding up a new feature, or bug fixing. I’m usually doing this for a couple of hours, which honestly flies when I get into the zone.

By 11:45 AM, I’m probably already thinking about lunch. I can't help it, it’s bulking season, so food is constantly on my mind. I train four days a week, splitting workouts into legs, shoulders, back, and chest. Today is leg day, so extra food is definitely on the agenda.

12:05 PM

Lunch time, a.k.a., the "I don’t know what I want" time. Everyone in the office loves falafel, which I’m not the biggest fan of. When I’m unsure, my go-tos are a poke bowl, Thai food, or Rack, a toasted sandwich shop. I’ve had more poke bowls since joining Fuzzy Labs than in the previous 23 years of my life, I love it. The only downside is that they’re not calorific.

Time to get locked in again. Recently, I’ve been working on a project with a large international company. We’re attempting to streamline their internal workflows using agentic RAG assistants at scale. I’m writing a lot of Go for this project, a language I’ve been wanting to learn for a while. It’s quickly becoming a favourite, especially since I want to learn more about concurrency, and Go is built with concurrency in mind.

Another aspect of the project I’m enjoying is working with domain experts and experienced engineers at the client; I’m learning loads. It’s a challenging project, but I love a challenge.

Out on the slopes in Austria

4:30 PM

Time for some snacks for some extra calories before going home and lifting some weights. After work, you’ll usually find me either at the pub with friends or more often than not at the gym.

6:00 PM

If I’m not out, I’ll be in the kitchen cooking up something good around this time. My favourite dish is probably Carbonara, something with simple ingredients but difficult to master. I’ve probably made it hundreds of times and there’s always something I’m looking to improve with each attempt, like the sauce. I’ve studied Chef Luciano Monosilio’s recipe more times than I can count, but I’m still nowhere near his level.

After dinner, it’s usually pretty chill. Lately, I’ve been looking at stuff for my next snowboarding trip, which I cannot wait for – 3 weeks to go. I might watch some TV too, at the moment, I’m watching “Dune: Prophecy” which has just come out.

10:00 PM

I am in bed.
