Fuzzy Labs are a Manchester based startup that help our clients productionise machine learning through Open Source MLOps. We exist to help harness and channel the power of AI more quickly and to turn the complexity of a chaotic world into the simplicity of an elegant solution.

We’ve built a great reputation with our customers for the value we deliver, our innovation driven culture and the technical expertise of our team. The market for our products and services is big and getting bigger and we are looking for a great Head of Engineering to help us continue to grow our team, products and services effectively and sustainably.

What we're looking for

We are looking for someone who understands the business, engineering and operational concerns that impact the way a product and services portfolio is built and develops strategies to improve engineering of both. Someone to:

  • Work alongside the CTO, leading the technical competencies, technology, and infrastructure needed to deliver our product and services MLOps strategies
  • Commit to a culture of innovation where R&D is as important as client projects
  • Build, mentor and coach the tech team providing thought leadership to their personal and professional growth and development.
  • Ensure that our engineering function is optimised for productivity, quality, and building for the future.
  • Have an understanding and experience of what is required to build awesome technology products.

A typical week

You’ll take on a range of responsibilities, leading the development team through technically challenging projects, helping to develop and grow the team, contributing to client proposals, and supporting the CTO in executing technical strategy.

Project delivery

  • Working closely with the lead engineer(s) to advise on technology, ensure quality of delivery, and remove blockers.
  • Working closely with customers to understand their needs, communicating project status, and supporting the customer on an on-going basis
  • Managing the technical team’s work schedule, allocating teams to projects, and leading project kickoffs.

People and growth

  • Managing progression within the team by running 1 to 1s, and leading the development and growth of our people.
  • Leading the hiring of technical roles within the team.
  • Empower individuals and teams with clear context and direction.
  • Driving continual aspiration for improvement across the organisation.

Commercial

  • Supporting the CTO and Commercial Director in writing proposals for new clients
  • Represent and reflect Fuzzy Labs’ values in client relationships and the wider technology segment in which we operate.
  • Communicate regularly and effectively internally and externally across multiple channels.

Qualifications

  • Based in Greater Manchester, UK. We’re a hybrid working team, typically spending 3 days in the office each week.
  • Eligible for UK government security clearance.
  • A passion for coding, data science, and open source technologies.
  • Prior experience in a technical leadership role.
  • Experience mentoring technical people from junior to senior level.
  • Excellent communication skills; both in customer-facing and internal team communication.
  • Experience with agile software development methodology.
  • Good Python coding skills.
  • Experience with cloud computing, for example AWS, Google Cloud or Azure, along with modern DevOps and MLOps.
  • Fluent in our core software tooling: Git, Unix/Linux, Docker, CI/CD. A strong opinion on your IDE / editor of choice is welcome ;)
  • Familiarity with modern machine learning tools, for instance TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch or SKLearn.
